Utah Trucking Schools and Programs

Utah is a stunning state that has no shortage of truck driving positions. The truck driving careers in Utah that appeal to you may allow you to earn a high wage and be on the road for as little or as much as you want to be.

In the state of Utah, obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License, or CDL, is a multistage process. Drivers who wish to obtain a CDL permit, especially a Class A permit for driving combination vehicles, must pass a rigorous screening process before they can begin training for their CDL-A. After the applicant has been screened, he or she must then pass several knowledge tests. Finally, the driver must pass several skills tests before the state will grant him or her a CDL.

Screening

Drivers must present the following legal documents to the state of Utah before they can begin training for a CDL-A:

    • A valid driver’s license with at least one year of experience as a fully licensed driver.
    • A certified birth certificate.
    • A valid Social Security card.
    • Proof of Utah residency, with two separate documents proving the applicant’s Utah address.
    • Proof of legal right to work in the United States.
    • Department of Transportation medical card.

After the state verifies the applicant’s documents, the applicant must surrender his regular driver’s license for the duration of his training. The state grants each applicant a Commercial Driver Instruction Permit during training, which functions in place of a regular driver’s license.

strong>Knowledge Tests

After training, the applicant must pass several knowledge tests. All applicants must pass the General Knowledge test, and drivers applying for a Class A license must also pass at least the Air Brakes test and the Combination Vehicle test.

Knowledge tests are closed book, but drivers may retake the tests any number of times. However, the testing fee is non-refundable, and each fee only entitles the applicant to two attempts. Drivers cannot retake the knowledge tests more than once each day.

Skills Tests

After passing the appropriate knowledge tests, the applicant must then demonstrate their practical ability to drive a commercial vehicle in several skills tests. First, applicants must pass a pre-trip inspection test. Next, the examiner will test the applicant’s ability to operate the commercial vehicle in a controlled environment. Finally, the applicant must pass an on-road skills test in live traffic. Like the knowledge tests, skills tests may be retaken if the applicant pays the non-refundable fee again. However, each fee only covers a single skills test.

If the applicant can fulfill all these requirements, the state of Utah will grant him or her a CDL.
