Drivers must meet a number of requirements in order to qualify for a Commercial Driver License (CDL) in the state of Oklahoma. This state requires you to have a CDL if you drive a vehicle that weighs more than 26,001 pounds, with a purpose to transport more than 16 individuals, which carries hazardous materials, or vehicles that require toxic material. Because of the nature of this type of driving, Oklahoma has strict requirements that must be met in order to be administered a CDL license.

Age Requirement

Drivers interested in intrastate driving must be at least 18 years of age. Drivers who are going to be doing interstate driving must be at least 21 years of age. Examples of intrastate driving would be bus drivers and interstate driving would be semi truck drivers.

Documentation

The state of Oklahoma requires that all drivers provide a form of identification that states both your full name and birth date. Examples of acceptable forms of identification include a U.S. Passport, Birth Certificate, Military ID or Driver’s License from another state. In the event that your name has changed, you will additionally be required to provide the court order for the name change.

CDL Application

The Oklahoma Department of Safety asks drivers to complete an application to obtain a CDL license. This application process covers a wide variety of topics, including general health, mental health, vision, hearing, age, training, medical history. The Department of Safety has the ability to deny any driver a CDL license if that driver fails to meet any of the application requirements.

Testing

Like other driver’s licenses, the state of Oklahoma requires that CDL applicants complete a vision, written and driving test. It is highly recommended that applicants thoroughly study the CDL manual available on the Department of Safety website.

Costs

The Department of Safety in Oklahoma does charge a $66.50 application and license fee for anyone initially applying for a CDL license. Additional fees may be required if existing commercial drivers need to retest or get a replacement license. There are also fees for endorsements, which allow you to drive specific types of commercial vehicles.

Medical Certification

The most recent requirement for a CDL license is the completion of medical certification. This is a federal requirement that must be met for both new applicants and drivers renewing their CDL license.
