Colorado Trucking Schools and Programs

Colorado has some stunning mountains and a lot of open roads. When you’re looking at truck driving careers in Colorado, you can find almost every industry, providing you with a lot of different opportunities to become employed as a trucker.

If you’re interested in becoming a commercial driver and you live in Colorado, you will have to complete the requirements for a Colorado CDL and pay the associated fees to receive your CDL.

Instruction Permit: Before obtaining a CDL in Colorado you will first need to earn an instruction permit for the Colorado CDL. To obtain your learner’s permit, you must be 18 years old and show identification. You must show proof that you are a legal U.S. resident and proof of your Social Security Number.

To get a permit you must also prove that you have passed a medical exam administered by the U.S. Department of Transportation within the last two years.

You must pass the Commercial Driver’s License Information System and National Driver Register records checks, conducted to insure that new drivers are not already in the system; pass the written CDL test, which will test your understanding of the laws for big rigs and commercial drivers in Colorado, and pay the current fee to receive your instruction permit and begin driving as a student.

The CDL Driving Test: In Colorado, road skills tests are provided by approved third parties who charge a fee for the test. The DMV website maintains, and updates monthly, a list of approved testing providers.

The CDL driving test consists of pre-trip inspection, vehicle control and on-road driving. You must take your CDL driving test in the same type of vehicle for which you are applying for a CDL.

Hazardous Material Endorsement:The U.S.A. Patriot Act requires a background check for all applicants for a hazardous material endorsement. You may apply for this background check online at http://www.hazprints.com or by phone at 877-429-7746. You must then go to the TSA fingerprint site and have your fingerprints and application forwarded by a TSA agent to TSA and the FBI. You may pay online or by phone with a credit card, or hand a money order to the TSA agent. If TSA determines that you qualify for a hazardous material endorsement, you may go to a driver’s license office to receive your endorsement. Note that endorsements are only available to U.S. citizens and lawful immigrants.

Who Cannot Receive a Hazardous Material Endorsement: Hazardous materials endorsements are not allowed for anyone who has been convicted during the last seven years or released during the last five years of any of the following offenses: Attempted murder, a firearms offense, kidnapping, rape or aggravated sexual assault, bribery, extortion, immigration violation, fraud or identity fraud, arson, robbery or drug offenses. Note that conspiracy to commit any of these felonies also disqualifies an individual from receiving a hazardous materials endorsement.

Anyone convicted of the following offenses is permanently disqualified from receiving a hazardous materials endorsement: Espionage, terrorism or a comparable state law, sedition, improper transportation of a hazardous material, treason, unlawful use, possession or sale of an explosive or explosive device, violation of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act, murder, or conspiracy to or attempt to commit any of these offenses.
