How Old Must I Be To Get A Class A CDL License

New York state requires that you be at least 21 years old to acquire your Class A license. Drivers who are over the age of 18 who have experience with commercial vehicles may apply for a special waiver. This waiver allows drivers under the age of 21 to obtain a limited CDL license valid only in New York.

If Your Hauling Hazardous Materials

What Should I Know About My CDL In New York

You should be aware that your CDL is the only license that you are allowed to carry by law. This means that you need to surrender your Class D license as soon as you get your CDL. The Class D license is the standard passenger license in New York. You could be fined as much as $5,000 for not surrendering your old license. The license needs to be renewed every five years.

Extra Conditions Imposed On Bus Drivers

If you are a bus driver, you will have to comply with even more conditions before getting your CDL. These extra conditions include:

- Must Submit Fingerprints And Undergo A Background Check

Getting your CDL requires that undergo a road test, get a background check and have a clean license. In most cases, your Class D license may be good enough to do so legally.

Upon application for a CDL in New York, you must certify that you have not held a driver license in any state or in the District of Columbia except NYS in the last 10 years. If you have, you must report every US state (or the District of Columbia) where you held a driver license in the last 10 years. You must also meet the requirements of the Federal regulations in 49 CFR Part 391, which include a requirement for a medical examination.
