Illinois Trucking Schools and Programs

Illinois truck driving schools are abundant thanks to the state having many small, industrial cities that pitch and drop freight on a daily basis. Whether you’d like to go to see in Chicago or some of the many different hubs across the Southern part of the state – there is sure to be an experience you don’t want to miss.

In the state of Illinois you need to have a CDL or Commercial Driver License. A CDL is necessary if you wish to drive tanker vehicles, those with hazardous materials and double or triple trailers. The class A CDL applies to combination vehicles that have a weight of 26,000 pounds or more. It also applies if the Gross Weight Vehicle Weight Rating of a vehicle that is being towed is more than 10,000 pounds.

Before getting a CDL you must meet certain requirements that are established by the state of Illinois and the federal government. Applicants must be at least 18 years old to apply for a CDL and 21 if they want to drive across state lines to transport materials. This regulation applies to all states and is established by the federal government. You must also pay a fee of $60 to apply if you don’t have a driver’s license in the state and $50 if you do currently possess a license. Illinois also requires that you carry a Medical Examiner’s Certificate while driving the vehicle that requires a CDL.

You will also need to pass two tests to obtain a CDL in Illinois. The written test is composed of several multiple-choice questions that you can prepare for using the Illinois Commercial Driver’s License Stud Guide. It is conducted on a computer and you are allowed to take the test up to three times. If you fail three times, you’ll need to wait 30 days before you can take the exam again. If you fail another three times, you’ll have to wait three months to attempt the exam again. For this reason, it is imperative to read the manual beforehand and study as much as possible to ensure that you pass.

A practical vehicle-based test follows and requires a pre-trip inspection of the vehicle to ensure that it is ready to make the trip. A control-skills test ensures that you know where each control for the vehicle is located. The driving test itself follows and must be done in a vehicle that matches the class of the test and must also be registered and insured to drive on the road.

If you wish to gain special certifications to haul hazardous materials, pull special trailers, or to drive tank or passenger vehicles you will need one or more of these proper endorsements:

    • Hazardous Materials (H) – requires a background check.
    • Tank Vehicles (N) – a vehicle with tanks that contain liquids or gaseous materials exceeding 1000 gallons.
    • Passenger (P) – Bus drivers, tour guides, chartered trips vehicles.
    • School Bus (S) – This will be used in addition to the (P) class license certification for transporting primary or secondary age school children.
    • Double/Triple (T) – multiple payload carriages.
