Alabama CDL Requirements

If you live in Alabama and you want to obtain your CDL license, you may be wondering how to prepare for the Alabama CDL exam. First of all, it is essential to note that Alabama adopted the Federal Commercial Motor Vehicle’s Safety Act, which makes the state part of a nationally recognized certification for commercial drivers.

Before you even begin preparing for the CDL test, you need to know what endorsement you will need. The type of endorsement you need will determine what test you will need to take. There are three different classifications of commercial drivers in the state of Alabama, and they are as follows.

Class A – This endorsement pertains to combination vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating, or GVWR, of 26,000 pounds or more. Drivers with Class A licenses can also drive vehicles in the Class B and C categories.

Class B – This endorsement pertains to single vehicles that weigh 26,000 pounds or more. If they are towing a trailer, the trailer must be 10,000 pounds or less. Drivers with a Class B license can also drive vehicles in the Class C category.

Class C – This endorsement is for drivers who wish to drive passenger vehicles that can seat 16 or more people. This also includes vehicles that wish to carry hazardous materials.

There are various exams you may need to take depending upon the endorsement you need and what you will use your CDL for. The exams you may need to complete are passenger transport, combination vehicles, air brakes, doubles/triples, hazardous materials and tankers.

Each of these tests are basic knowledge exams that ensure you have the information that is necessary to drive commercial vehicles. If you successfully pass the necessary basic knowledge tests, you will then need to take three different skills tests. These tests will be performed on the road, and you must use the vehicle you wish drive after getting your license. These tests include a vehicle inspection, vehicle control and the road test.

You will also need to pass a physical examination, a hearing test, and a vision test. For people to qualify for CDLs, they must have excellent hearing, 20/40 vision and a field of vision that is 70 degrees. They also cannot be color blind. If you pass all of these tests and medical requirements, you can then obtain your Alabama CDL.
