Massachusetts Trucking Schools

Massachusetts has a mix of water, mountains and farms, providing a variety of scenery for truck drivers. Many truck driving careers in Massachusetts are out there, so you will be able to find one anywhere you live.

To be eligible for a CDL license in Massachusetts, you must be at least 18 years old for an instate CDL license, or 21 years old for an interstate CDL license to drive in all states. Applications are available on the RMV website or at any RMV full-service office.

Documentation: To apply for a permit, you will be required to provide the following documentation:

    • Valid Massachusetts driver’s license
    • Social Security Number
    • US Department of Transportation approved medical certificate (if driving vehicles over 10,000 lbs or transporting 15 or more passengers or hazardous materials)

In lieu of a driver’s license, an applicant will need to prove date of birth, Massachusetts residency and a valid signature.

Written Test and Fees: You must present a completed application and the required documentation in person at any full service RMV office at least two hours prior to closing time. At that time, you must pay the testing fees of $30 for the basic written test and $10 for each additional endorsement test taken on that date. You will also be given an eye test.

If you choose to take the endorsement tests at a later date, you will again pay $30 for the first one and $10 for each additional test taken on the same date. Once you have passed the written and eye tests, you will be given a two-year CDL permit which will allow you to practice driving a commercial vehicle in the company of a licensed CDL operator.

Road Test and Fees: When you are ready to take the road test for your CDL license, you must schedule it by telephoning the RMV telephone center. Road test appointments cannot be made in person. There is a fee of $20 for the road test.

Converting to a Massachusetts CDL:Applicants who hold an active CDL permit from another state may apply to convert it to a Massachusetts CDL license if they meet the following criteria:
