Nebraska Trucking Schools

There are many truck driving careers in Nebraska, primarily in the general trucking and agricultural industries.

Obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License in Nebraska has several different components. For an intrastate CDL, the applicant must be at least 18 years old and already have a standard license. To cross state lines the applicant must be at least 21 years old. Unless the applicant is claiming Excepted Status, the medical certification process must be completed prior to applying.

Drivers who intend to apply for a hazardous materials endorsement must complete the TSA investigation process and provide fingerprints before going to the Motor Vehicle Department. Sheriffs in several counties in Nebraska have agreements to take fingerprints for the security check. Once the state receives notice that the driver is not a security threat, DMV will send a letter to the driver so they can continue with the licensing process.

Resident aliens who wish to obtain any license, including a CDL, must provide all pertinent USCIS documents. The documents will be verified prior to a license being issued. This can take twenty federal work days to finish.

The applicant will need to bring several other documents when applying. Nebraska is fairly strict on identification, so the applicant should be prepared with at least one identification form. This can be an original certified copy of a birth certificate that shows date of birth and full name, an unexpired passport or an unexpired state-issued driver’s license or identification card. Two documents proving the person’s name and address must also be presented. It is also a good idea to bring a Social Security card.

New CDL drivers will be required to take vision, written knowledge and skills tests. Drivers who are renewing a license and unexpired CDL holders who have just moved to Nebraska may be waived from the written and skills test at the Department’s discretion. Everyone who wishes to hold a hazardous materials endorsement must retake that test. The vision test is also mandatory for everyone.

Skills tests are administered by appointment by third party vendors. Drivers may also be required to retest with a DMV staff member as part of the Department’s audit process. Failure to take or pass the audit test will result in cancellation of the CDL. The license is good for five years and costs $57.50 for those over 21. There may be other fees as well.
